2 Peter
An Inductive-ish Study of 2 Peter
Hi Ladies,
Welcome to our 2 Peter study! I’m so grateful for your participation in this study, as it holds me accountable to keep going, and I always learn from what is shared in these groups.
For this week and next, please plan to think in big pictures. We will dig into details in the weeks that follow, but for now let’s read all three chapters daily, if possible. Maybe you could aim to get through this little book five times this week and five times next week so that you have a solid overview. Diane mentioned that reading out loud helps, so that might be a good plan for at least a few of the read-throughs. I also like to listen to the book and have burned a CD for my ancient car that I’ll copy for anyone who, like me, joyfully drives a vintage ride.
While you are reading, key an eye out for:
- A Key Verse that summarizes the main message of the book
- Information about the author of the book
- Information about the recipients of the book – who were they and why did they need a letter?
Use the notebook paper in your book to record your insights, so that we can share later in the week.
If you have extra time, I suggest these overviews/introductions to the book.

Week 2
This week we will continue reading the entire book, aiming for 5 times this week.
While we are reading, look for 4-5 keywords or concepts in the text. You might want to think more about concepts than words. For example, if you thought diligent was a keyword, you might want to consider other places where diligence or faithfulness or every effort is used since they mean virtually the same thing.
We will share our list later in the week and compare notes. I'm expecting to be surprised again as you all come up with things I didn't think of!
Week 3
Hi Ladies,
It’s list week! Here’s the plan:
- Pick the top four or five words from our conversation identifying keywords in 2 Peter and list them on the first page of text in your folder. You can do more words if you like, and if you only get two words done but love your family well this week, we will call it a win!
- Pick a symbol or color for each word. For example, for knowledge, you might want to highlight it in yellow or draw a little pair of glasses over the word. I think colors are easier to see than symbols, but you do you. Add those colors or symbols to the list of words you created on the first page of your text. You are making a legend - like that thing on a map that explains symbols.
- Mark these words in the text. You can highlight all this in one read-through if you like, but for me, I try to mark only one keyword per read through. It’s easy to miss one and I’ll keep finding more every time I read it this week.
- On the notebook paper included in your booklet, create a list for each keyword. Note the reference, and write out how the word is used in the context (example below)
- After you create your lists, read through them and try to come up with a one or two-line summary of what Peter has to say about each. This is hard for me, but it always causes me to think deeply, even if I don’t get the perfect, concise answer I’m looking for.
Knowing/Know/Knowledge
Verse Context
1:3 knowing Jesus is the means by which God grants us all things pertaining to Life and godliness
3:17 because you know that people twist Paul’s words, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability.
Happy reading and listing, Ladies!
Week 4
Hi Ladies,
This week we ask for help from some trusted teachers as we continue our 2 Peter study. Here’s the plan:
- Read through chapter 1:1-15 and try to identify a verse for meditation this week. This might be a verse you see as very important, but it might also be a verse that raises questions in your mind. Copy the verse on one of the note cards or post-its included in your folder and place it somewhere that you will see it – bathroom mirror, over the changing table, by your computer, on the wall behind your kitchen sink.
- Read through 1:1-15 again and identify a question or two you have about the text. For example, I want to know exactly what “partaker of the divine nature” means and why Peter structures his list of virtues the way he did.
- Pick and choose from the options I’ve listed below as you have time. We’ll be listening to sermons or commentary from online teachers, or reading online commentaries. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we’ll pool our knowledge and share any insights we received. Remember, you don’t have to listen to everything. You can pick and choose messages that will help answer your questions, or you can listen to one teacher teach the entire section. This is exciting! I’m praying for you all to “Come and Eat” and know Jesus better through this study.

Commentary to read:
John Gill – the good news is that Gill comments on every verse and is usually solid. The bad news is that he can be a little bit of a hyper-Calvinist. “He preached in the same church as C. H. Spurgeon over one hundred years earlier. Yet most people today have never heard of John Gill. This is unfortunate, since his works contain priceless gems of information that are found nowhere except in the ancient writings of the Jews. Presented here is a verse by verse exposition of the entire Testament.”

Matthew Henry
“Originally written in 1706, Matthew Henry's six volume Complete Commentary provides an exhaustive look at every verse in the Bible.”

Week 8
Hi Ladies,
This is our last week in 1 Peter! Our next very short study will be the little 1 chapter book, Jude, which covers many of the same themes as 1 and 2 Peter. I’m planning for us to start this book on Tuesday, July 1, so please let me know right away if you’d like to participate so that I can get your notebook into your hands.
We’ll follow the same basic instructions this week as we did last week. Here’s the plan:
- Read through Chapter 3 and try to identify a verse for meditation this week. Copy the verse on one of the note cards or post-its included in your folder and place it somewhere that you will see it.
- Read through Chapter 3 again and identify a question or two you have about the text. Try to come up with a theory on your own, and then use trusted resources to answer your questions.
- Pick and choose from the options I’ve listed below as you have time. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we’ll pool our knowledge and share any insights we received.
