Jude
An Inductive-ish Study of Jude
Hi Ladies,
Welcome to our Jude study! I’m so grateful for your participation in this study, as it holds me accountable to keep going, and I always learn from what is shared in these groups.
I hope you have your workbook, but if not, please find yours in the Free Among Friends drawers to the left of the Welcome Center.
For this week and next, please plan to think in big pictures. We will dig into details in the weeks that follow, but for now let’s read the book daily, if possible. Maybe you could aim to get through this little book five times this week and five times next week so that you have a solid overview. Diane mentioned that reading out loud helps, so that might be a good plan for at least a few of the read-throughs. I also like to listen to the book as I am driving.
While you are reading, key an eye out for:
- A Key Verse that summarizes the main message of the book
- Information about the author of the book
- Information about the recipients of the book – who were they and why did they need a letter?
Use the notebook paper in your book to record your insights, so that we can share later in the week.
If you have extra time, I suggest these overviews/introductions to the book.
- The Bible Project Video https://bibleproject.com/videos/jude/
- Grace to You (MacArthur) introduction
https://www.gty.org/library/bible-introductions/MSB65/jude
If you read anything that strikes you as wonderful or have a question, please hit reply all and share it with the group. There’s no teacher here – just a group of us learning together.
Look for emails from me on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays for this study
Every Blessing,
Susan
Jude, Week 2
Please continue reading through Jude daily, but this week we are looking for key ideas and key words in the text. Look for words that are repeated, including different forms of the word. For example, when Jude talks about judgment, he may use words like condemnation, eternal chains, eternal darkness, etc. Jot down your top 4 or 5 key words and we’ll compare notes later in the week.
Praying that the Lord blesses your time in His Word this week!
Susan
Jude, Week 3
- God,Jesus, Holy Spirit
- Author and pronouns
- Recipient and pronouns
- Salvation, save
- Faith, believe
- References to time and places
- False teachers and words that refer to them
- Beloved
- Condemnation/judgement/punishment
- Keep, kept, remain
- Condemnation, destroyed, judgment, punishment, utter darkness,
- Angels (fallen angels with black, holy angels either yellow)
- Ungodly also vs. eternal)
- Contend
- Mercy
- all the descriptions of the false teachers
Now that you have a list of key words and concepts, let’s highlight them in your text.
- On the first page of your text, create a legend by listing the words or ideas you plan to mark.
- Next to each word, assign a color or symbol that you will use to identify it in the text.
- Then, go through your text and color-code each occurrence of those words or ideas—or use the chosen symbols to mark them instead.
Use the notebook paper provided to make a list with each occurrence of the word. It might look something like:
Condemnation/punishment/judgment/destruction
Verse 4 The false teachers were designated for condemnation
Verse 5 Even though Jesus saved a people from Egypt, afterward He destroyed those who did not believe
Verse 6 angels who fell are kept in eternal chains until the judgment
After you create a list, try to write a one or two line summary of each list.
Jude, Week 4
Today we will begin looking at commentaries and/or listening to sermons about Jude 1-16. As you begin, read the selection and ask a couple of questions about the text. Write them in your book and be looking for answers as you study. Please share your questions with the group to help us all think carefully about the text.
I’m including a link to the Bible with Strongs references, where you can look up individual words to see their full meaning in the Greek text. Please share insights! You will note that I added Thom Schreiner’s commentary as a link this time. I have checked with the pastors concerning him in the past and they do think he is a solid scholar.
