James
An Inductive-ish Study of James
James Assignments
August 18
Ladies,
Welcome to our study of James! It’s always exciting to dig into a new book together, and I’m looking forward to hearing your insights on James.
This week’s assignment is to focus on the big picture.
- Try to find time to read or listen to the entire book three times this week, and instead of thinking about the details, see if you can pick up some major themes.
- Try to identify a key verse, one that sums up what the author is saying in the entire book. Write that key verse on the first page of your text.
- Note information about the author and recipients on the notebook paper included in your folder.
Here’s how I plan to tackle this week, but you do what you can with the time the Lord allows you for study. Everything you do is good, and there’s no universal standard of “enough” or “not enough.” Remember that the Proverbs woman looked well to the ways of her own household rather than looking to someone else’s home and trying to do everything that person did! I think that example extends to all we do – we do what good God allows us to do within the providential circumstances He has placed us in.
That being said, I offer this just as an example, a goal for me that may or may not work out – you do you!
- Monday – Read the book out loud, which helps me with concentration (thanks for this tip, Diane)
- Tuesday – listen to the book while driving to and from work
- Wednesday- watch this video overview and take notes https://bibleproject.com/guides/book-of-james/ Listen to the book while driving
- Thursday-Read the book with the goal of finding the Key verse
- Friday—Read the book with the goal of finding information about the author and recipients. I will likely write a brief summary of what I learn on the notebook paper included in the notebook
- Saturday/Sunday—reserved for catching up, rereading the text and/or visiting other resources about the whole book, like
- John MacArthur’s character sketch of James found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJwJkTl1s8w
- Paul Tripp’s Summary of James https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdDg_-Dm404
- Introductory material in my study Bibles and borrowed commentaries https://www.esv.org/resources/esv-global-study-bible/introduction-to-james/
If you have any questions or tips for the group, we all want to hear from you. Just hit “reply all” on this email or any other assignment and we’ll all help each other! Remember it is a group study – there’s no teacher or 23 teachers, depending on how you look at it!
Praying for you as we begin,
August 25
Hi Ladies,
This week, keep reading James in overview mode. We’ll be looking for 4-6 key words in the text. You can find them by these identifiers:
- They might be repeated often in the book
- They may only be mentioned a few times but directly relate to your key verse/concept
Remember to add synonyms – if we were talking about “works”, we might add “deeds” or “labors”, depending on the context, for example.
Let’s plan on sharing these words on Friday so that we have an opportunity to see any word we might have missed.
After I choose my words, I usually write them on the first page of my text and create a legend--that box on a map that tells you what the symbols on the map mean. You can choose a color or a symbol for each key word. For example, perhaps you might draw a little fish shape (Ichthys) over every use of faith, or you might choose to highlight that word in a specific color, instead. We’ll use this chart next week when we begin marking the text.
Let’s keep praying for all of us to depend on the Holy Spirit to enlighten the text for us as we study.
September 1
Dear Sisters,
Everyone either loves or hates list weeks – they do seem to inspire strong feelings! Do your best to trust the process, which has proved so helpful to many of us. Here’s the plan to guide you through the next two weeks:
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Choose Your Keywords
- From our conversation, pick 4–6 key words that stand out in the book of James.
- Write them on the first page of your text (in your study folder).
- You can do more or fewer—just do what you can with the time the Lord gives you, and we’ll call it a win!
- Remember that this will be spread over two weeks, so pace yourself accordingly. I am planning to identify and mark my key words this week, and create my lists one keyword a day next week. You might find it easier to do it a different way, and that’s totally acceptable.
- Create a Legend (Symbols or Colors)
- Choose a color or symbol for each keyword.
- Example: For “knowledge,” you might highlight it in yellow or draw a small pair of glasses next to the word.
- Add these symbols/colors next to your word list to create your legend—like a map key that explains your markings.
- Mark the Keywords in the Text
- Using your legend, begin marking your keywords in the text.
- You can highlight all the words in one pass, or—like me—you may want to do one keyword per read-through to avoid missing any.
- The more you read, the more you’ll start noticing them!
- Make Keyword Lists
- On the notebook paper in your booklet, make a separate list for each keyword.
- For each instance, write:
- The verse reference
- A short note explaining how the word is used in context
Example from our 2 Peter Study – Keyword: Knowing/Know/Knowledge
Verse
Context
1:3
Knowing Jesus is the means by which God grants us all things for life and godliness.
3:17
Because you know some twist Paul’s words, be careful not to be led astray.
- Summarize Each Word’s Meaning
- Once your lists are complete, take a few minutes to reflect.
- Write a 1–2 line summary of what James is saying about each keyword.
- This might feel challenging, but it always leads to deep thinking—even if the summary isn’t “perfect.”
- Keep Reading/Listening
- Stay in the text daily—as much as you’re able—by reading or listening or listing.
- The more familiar you become with James, the more these key themes will stand out!
- One more idea
For Word Study as you create your lists:
KJV with Strongs #s: https://www.stepbible.org/?q=version=ESV@reference=Jude&options=VNHUG
(click on any word to see a definition of the Greek word and how it is used in Scripture.)
Happy reading and listing, Ladies!
Let’s see what God has to show us in His Word this week!
September 5
Hi Ladies,
Please send your word lists to the group so that we can compare notes. You may have found something I missed!
September 8
By now you should have your list of keywords and have your legend created. You might have begun the process of marking and making lists, too. Let’s continue that process this week, and plan to compare notes about what we are learning on Friday!
Praying for perseverance through this week,
Susan
September 15
Finally! It is time to start taking a close look at the text. Here’s how it works:
- Pray for the Holy Spirit to enlighten your reading this week, and that of everyone else in the study. Pray for our Pastors as they prepare to teach and counsel this week, too, that the Holy Spirit will give them insight.
- Read James 1:1-18
- Find a question or two about the text that you might want to answer this week. For example, I might wonder what it means to be perfect in verse 4, or what does it look like to pray in faith with no doubting? Looking for answers to questions as you study brings a whole new dimension to study, and it feels great when God helps you find the right resource to answer just the question that has you stumped.
- Pick a verse for meditation this week. Write it on an index card or sticky note included in your folder and put it somewhere that you will see it often. (I usually put mine by my computer monitor, but over the sink or on the bathroom mirror are also good options.)
- Go to various teachers and resources to find the answers to your questions, and, as you have time, to learn more about the text. I’m including an impossible number of resources here, so please pick and choose from the teachers you find most helpful. Feel free to supplement with commentaries, study Bibles and other resources.
- Plan to share at least one helpful insight that you find in this week’s study. It’s so encouraging when lots of us participate , but if that’s very difficult for you, we understand.

Hi ladies!
We are wrapping up our study of James this week, with James 5:12-20. I hope this has been a rich blessing to you and that you’ll keep going to the end of the study!
Our trusty instructions:
- Pray for the Holy Spirit to enlighten your reading this week, and that of everyone else in the study. Pray for our Pastors as they prepare to teach and counsel this week, that the Holy Spirit will give them insight, too.
- Read James 5:12-20
- Find a question or two about the text that you might want to answer this week, and write them on the back of the pages facing the text.
- Pick a verse for meditation this week. Write it on an index card or sticky note included in your folder and put it somewhere that you will see it often.
- Go to various teachers and resources to find the answers to your questions, and, as you have time, to learn more about the text. Please pick and choose from the teachers you find most helpful. Feel free to supplement with commentaries, study Bibles and other resources.
- Plan to share at least one helpful insight that you find in this week’s study, but if that’s very difficult for you, we understand.
